| FJC Pilots Electronic Safety Deposit Box Program - (Nampa, September 30, 2009) The Nampa Family Justice Center is now one of four sites nation-wide piloting a new program that provides a safer way for victims of domestic violence to keep their important papers. The Verizon Foundation has partnered with the National Family Justice Center Alliance and the Nampa Family Justice Center to provide electronic safety deposit boxes for survivors of domestic violence. The other three pilot sites for this year long project are Hillsborough County, FL, New Orleans Family Justice Center, and San Diego Family Justice Center.
This program will enable fifty women to receive password protected flash drives on which to store their important documents and files such as copies of birth certificates, protection orders, school records, mortgage papers etc. This is a very unique, innovative program that will greatly aid victims of abuse in their quest to leave an abusive relationship. Safety planning is a critical piece of a victim planning to leave a relationship. This new program will provide a safe alternative to storing important documents for victims of abuse. A second option in this program gives women the option of scanning their documents into an electronic fax-filing system, which will store copies of their documents on a password-protected website.
“The Electronic Safety Deposit Box program is a wonderful program that provides a safe alternative for victims as they try to implement safety planning in their journey from an abusive relationship. We often see clients carrying their important papers in diaper bags or in the trunk of their car and have to scramble to make copies of important papers that come in the mail and are needed for identification purposes” Rebecca Lovelace, Executive Director of the Nampa Family Justice Center, said. “This program will give victims one more tool to help them take control of their life. Domestic Violence is about power and control. This program, thanks to the National Family Justice Center Alliance and the Verizon Foundation, will help put control back in the victims hand and away from an abuser.”
The pilot program is funded through a grant from the Verizon Foundation that also funded the creation of the Family Justice Center Institute, the technology and training arm of the NFJCA.
“Victims of domestic violence can amass huge volumes of papers while going through the system seeking help,” said Casey Gwinn, President of the National Family Justice Center Alliance. “Instead of hauling everything around in a diaper bag, through the electronic safety deposit box, victims will be provided with portable, password protected ways to store everything securely at a Family Justice Center location. This is using technology to meet the needs of victims and it has the potential to be used in domestic violence agencies across America.”
